Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival (BFMAF) is delighted to announce that it has been named one of MovieMaker Magazine’s Top 25 Coolest Film Festivals.

These festivals made many sacrifices for the greater good this year because of COVID-19, from postponements to pivots online. But the stellar reputations they’ve built for being fun, supportive, and groundbreaking can’t be dented by the pandemic. In fact, making sacrifices for the greater good is the epitome of cool. We hope this list helps these festivals stay on people’s minds and in their hearts, and that their audiences will be more eager than ever to return, when it’s safe. BFMAF was selected from a search of over 9000 Festivals across the globe and was identified for its forward-thinking programming, unique location, and well-executed event.

Selection was made by a panel consisting of critic and programmer Ela Bittencourt, artist Sky Hopinka, founder of Cinetic Marketing Ryan Werner, producer Eran Polishuk and filmmaker Garrett Bradley.

The list was presented jointly by MovieMaker Magazine – a leading quarterly publication for independent cinema and FilmFreeway – a website that manages the submission process for thousands of Film Festivals worldwide.

Panelist Sky Hopink, whose strong relationship with the Festival dates back to 2017 when his film Dislocation Blues won the Berwick New Cinema Award, described the Festival as “a remarkable accomplishment” that aids with its “friendly and welcoming atmosphere” managing “to include the town and the landscape and history into the programming”.

The Festival is honoured to be sharing this accolade with many brilliant colleagues from around the world including Locarno Film Festival, Images Festival, Courtisane, Il Cinema Ritrovato, BAMCinemaFest, DokuFest, Festival Internacional de Cine de Valdivia, Mostra de Cinema de Tiradentes and LPA International Film Festival to name just a few!
